Kalon

Kalon (καλόν) is an ancient Greek word that means "beautiful," "good," "noble," or "fine". It's most often used to describe the ideal of physical and moral beauty.

Too often in our modern society our consumption of the human body in media is highly sexualized, advertised, and edited. This interaction with the body through photography has only fed our insatiable appetite to change ourselves and the way we look. I am suggesting we need to stop looking at what makes us different. Instead, I want to show what we have in common- despite gender or race. Kalon is defined as the ideal of beauty. The ideal of beauty to me is less about the physicality of it and more about the ambiguity of beauty. It's hard to find this kind of beauty when the wrong things are given attention to. For example, showcasing these photos in color may inhibit the viewer from looking at the body and more on the skin color. Or, putting too much in the photograph could take away from the abstract quality I aimed to show. The collages write their own narrative through the telling of an intimate love story. The ultimate goal of this work is to ignite conversation about what beauty is.
