The Embrace

“The Embrace” is my attempt to showcase all bodies as worthy of being recognized as pieces of art. When initially doing research for this project, I wanted to draw inspiration from other “nude” photographers. I was disappointed with what I saw. For the most part, I was met with a lack of diversity in subject and composition. I believe this is detrimental. We need to expose more people to all bodies types in this genre of photography. When exhibiting this work it was essential that everyone found something they could identify with. Whether that be a scar, body roll, or skin color— there was commonality felt in at least one image between the audience and the photograph.

The Embrace Hands

“The Embrace Hands” show both the negative and positive sides of humanity. On the left are the worst aspects of us. Through the storytelling of hands and gestures, the viewer can begin to identify qualities present in all people. Negative characteristics are shown in the first image such as anger, shame, greed, pride, humiliation, and guilt. The right side showcases the best of humanity: tenderness, companionship, acceptance, reverence, curiosity, and love. While we may find ourselves preferring one over the other, that would give us an incomplete image of humanity. No one exists with only one side. Recognizing both is the first step not only to loving oneself better but also to understanding that this is not merely a self-portrait—it is a reflection of all of us.
